Weekly Update Week of 3/19/18

Thank you, Diya for another great update!

Weekly Update

This week has been productive and interesting. Here’s how it went!

Math
In math this week we have been working with fractions. We’ve been converting units in word problems and expressions. Like how many pounds are in an ounce. It would be a fraction. That’s an example of the many things that we’ve been doing in math! We’ve also been doing fraction word problems and thinking of strategies we could use to solve them. We’ve been multiplying fractions also. We learnt how to simplify fractions while multiplying them just by finding a common factor between the two. Math has been very cool this week, learning different problem solving strategies and making math easier!

Social Studies
In social studies we have been learning about the thirteen colonies and the New England colonies, the Middle colonies, and the Southern colonies. We’ve been using our note taking docs that Mrs. Gestrich gave us to take notes on what makes each of the regions unique. We’ve all learnt so many things, like the founders for every colony and the reason those colonies were founded. Maybe for religious freedom, maybe for a better life, there are so many reasons! Mrs. Gestrich has been teaching us really well too! Social studies, as always, is very fun because of her teaching and we’ve learned lots!

Science
Science has been interesting this week! We drank kool-aid! Well, that was for an experiment. We are learning about concentrated and dilute solutions. We did an experiment where we took kool-aid and observed it. One cup of kool-aid had a spoon of powder and 1000 ml of water, the other with 3 spoons powder and 1000 ml of water. When we observed, we found differences in color, smell, taste, and looks. One of the kool-aids had no flavor at all, except for a watery taste. The other had a very strong and sweet, tangy taste and a strong scent. We learnt that the strong tasting and smelling one was concentrated, meaning it had more solute to solvent ratio than the other. The other kool-aid solution was dilute, meaning it had less solute to solvent ratio. We’ve also starting looking into other differences between concentrated and dilute solutions, like their differences in mass and volume. Science has been filled with experiments this week!

ELA
ELA has been productive this week. We have been working on improving our wellness. This week we have been collecting baseline data.We have been creating an improvement plan. Since we are in different wellness groups, each group is studying a different dimension of wellness. We are working on finding ways to clear up our calendar and find time to improve our wellness. Like if I was improving my emotional wellness, I would take a tiny part that falls under the emotional umbrella, such as spending time outside, and clear up my calendar to find time to spend time outside. Just like that, we are collecting this data. All of this improvement plan business will collect information to write a research paper on our wellness. Everyone is busy improving their wellness or planning to in ELA. ELA is definitely making everybody intellectually well!

This week has been super duper productive and very jam-packed with learning!

Thanks for such a thorough report of the week, Diya! I appreciate this so much, and I'm sure all of the students' parents do too!
