I hope you all enjoyed a wonderful Thanksgiving with family and friends. Although a busy time of year, this time together allows us to take a break from our day-to-day routines and enjoy the company of those closest to us. I thought I would take this time and update everyone on some of the things we have been up to thus far! We officially started our memoir unit a few weeks ago. After being introduced to memoirs and reading several mentor texts, students were asked to analyze different memoirs to find specific elements of a memoir. Students used sticky notes to mark up the texts with the various elements. This provided students with further practice of providing evidence from the text which is something that we will go much deeper into later on in the year. Everyone did a fabulous job! All 5th graders were invited to dress up as one of their interests in October! Which team could build the highest tower of cups? Which team could keep a balloon in the air the longest? How long could the whole class keep 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 balloons in the air? Everyone did a great job contributing different ideas and strategies to reach our goals! On one of the first days of school we made the comparison of how our thoughts are like bubbles in many ways. Students blew bubbles and came up with some fantastic comparisons! The chart they created will hang on the wall all year to serve as a reminder that all of our thoughts can be fragile, easily popped, easily added onto, and should be handled with care. Students got a chance to see all of the books in our classroom library and add to their "Books to Read" list.
