Book Talks

Book talks are an excellent way for you to share a great book you have read with your classmates. You will develop a written book talk (directions below) and read it to the class. Book talks will be graded according to the Book Talk Rubric.
    You will be assigned a date for your presentation. You must have finished reading the book in order to present it. It is your responsibility to write the date of your book talk in your agenda. It is likely you will read many books between the time your Book Talk date is assigned and the date. You decide which book to present for your Book Talk.
    Completed book talks will be kept in a binder in our class library. Anyone looking for a book to read will be able to read your recommendation.

Book Talks will have four parts:
  1. About the book (1-2 paragraphs)
    1. Basic Information about the book:
      1. the title of the book (underlined),
      2. the author’s name,
      3. the genre of the book.
    2. A brief summary of the book (one to two paragraphs).
      1. the main characters (S), the setting and his/her/their motivation (W)
      2. the problem (B)
      3. the resolution/solution (S) (If possible, try not to give away the ending. You want to motivate people to read the book and find out the ending themselves.)
      4. at least one theme from the book..

  1. Recommendation: Why you chose the book (1 paragraph)
    1. Rate your book as a 9-10. Make sure the book you choose for your book talk is one you would rate a “9” or a “10” (on a scale of 1-10; 10 being the best).
    2. Write a paragraph telling why you chose to present the book, what makes it a “9” or a “10.” Tell why you would recommend it. Give specific examples. (Realistic characters? Problems you or other kids could relate to? Author’s craft? Cliff hangers? etc.)

  1. Present your book talk to the class (oral presentation)
    1. Bring a copy of the book with you (If you choose a public/school library book and you have returned the book, please print out a picture of the book. If you are unable to print at home, please plan ahead and print the picture at school before the day the book talk is due.)
    2. Share your book talk with the class. Speak loud enough so everyone can hear you. Share your enthusiasm for your book so others will want to read it too!


  2. Self-Assessment
    1. Complete the Book Talk Rubric-Self Assessment form and pass in to Mrs. Kewriga on the day your book talk is due.
