These kids are working so hard in their classes. They are preparing for MCAS, getting on top of yours in social studies learning how to multiply and divide fractions in math class and more! They are learning so much more than they ever learned before! They’ve been doing such a great job so they’re celebrating with a historical fiction movie with popcorn on Friday to end their book club. They really deserve it because these kids are working harder than they ever had before; so good job kids! 

Math
For math kids are working very hard on multiplying and dividing fractions and more. Kids are really getting on the struggle bus morning and afternoon. We are doing multi step word problems, and dividing with decimals, converting fractions and tons of other stuff you would never believe! Here at Mill Pond your kids are working harder than ever before. At the end of the year be expecting your kid to be in the smartest class in the school. Your kid has never been luckier to have the BEST MATH TEACHER EVER!!!!!!!!!!

ELA
In ELA kids are working hard to prepare for MCAS. We are learning lots of stuff about the civil rights movement, slavery, segregation and more. I swear when these kids grow up they're going to be history teachers! I know some of us could already be one they know so much!

Activity Period
In activity period, we usually just work on unfinished work or missing assignments in Math, Science, social studies, or ELA. Every single student is making sure that they are caught up on every single assignment. If there’s one assignment that one student has to turn in, the teacher asks politely and I’ll get right to it: you barely need to ask them, they'll just do it by themselves. You won’t be able to see a missing assignment in this class for 1 million years. Everyone’s so on top of stuff.

Social Studies
In social studies we are learning about the French and Indian war and the Revolutionary War. We are also learning very good nonfiction text structures, gosh some of these kids could already write a whole nonfiction book themselves. ​

Specials:
PE: Basketball
So in P.E we had time to do whatever we wanted to do and then the teacher made us practice some skills such as dribbling under your feet and then trying to bounce the ball while laying down.


Library: Gale Elementary
We learned about a new database called Gale Elementary. We got to search up different things we wanted to know about. It will also help with upcoming projects

Music: Ukuleles
We played the song Riptide on the Ukulele and learned a new note. We have learned four notes on the ukulele.

Art:  Koru paintings and cut and smudge
Koru paintings are paintings from New Zealand from the Moari people. It is really important to their culture. It had a certain amount of shapes and specific shapes. Cut and smudge 

Math: Fractions
We already started a little bit of fractions at the start of the year. Now we are learning how to find equivalent fractions using multiplication and division.

SS: Middle and southern colonies 
In class we are learning about the thirteen original English colonies.
Some fun facts: 
In Maryland Baltimore was named Baltimore because of Lord Baltimore the 
founder of Maryland. 
The Carolinas were once one colony but everything that happened in each was so different they decided to turn it into two colonies.

ELA: Vision Boards
Everyone in class had to make a Vision board. We created our vision boards by quotes we follow and are inspired by. We might even be inspired by sport players etc so then we would put those on our vision boards. We could make our vision boards online or on paper.

To start off we had some great division and multiplication learning from Mrs. Kewriga and Ms. Filippelli!  In the gym we played a game called gaga ball. It’s a fun game where you toss the ball up and when it lands on the ground you try to hit it with your palm and get people out. It was really fun! Also in social studies we learned about the Pilgrims and their very hard journey to land on Cape Cod. The Pilgrims faced a horrible winter and had a lack of food. Half of the Pilgrims died from starvation and diseases. In art we started our Koru paintings. Koru is a type of plant from New Zealand. But when it fully grows it unrolls into a spiral. Next, we had hot coco. In conclusion, this week was really fun and awesome!!

Specials

P.E : We started a tennis unit in PE this week. We practiced tennis skills like striking, forehand, and backhand.

Tech/Library : We learned how to use Worldbook, that is a database. It has ebooks on it. In makerspace we played this game called Interland kindness. It is a game where you collect hearts and stop bullies from putting inter-nauts down.

Music : In music we had some shares. Henry played a song on the base. Gauri and Anais sang a winter song from chorus. Lastly, Ashmita and Ameya played Mary had a little lamb and Hot Cross Buns on the clarinet.

Art : In art we finished drawing our Contour shoes. We had to focus on the lines and draw very specifically.

Math

In math we learned how to use area models to do multi-digit multiplication. We also learned P.E.M.D.A.S.

Social Studies 
In social studies we learned about the columbian exchange. We did a webquest to learn more about it. A webquest is kind of like google slides but more advanced.

ELA
In ELA we are writing personal narratives. This week we learned the “So what!” which is the message or moral. We are also starting new book clubs. This time it is about inclusivity. We are at about 300 stars for our 1,000 book challenge. We are rocking it.👍

​SEL
This week in SEL we talked about different perspectives. The way you might feel is different than how someone else might feel.

We played trashketball, decimal of the day, tricky word problems with tape diagrams. Tashketball works like this basketball but with math and a trash can and diced.

We learned a lot in ELA.  In ELA, we learned about refrain poems and then we wrote them about Jumbies and Book Club books.  We met our super secret Jumbie Pen Pals.  Then, we built Jumbies and wrote about it.  We went from class to class and looked at other people’s Jumbies.  

Now we are doing Social Studies.  We are learning about latitude and longitude and working with our thought buddies and researching about maps.  We learned about landforms-bays, peninsulas, deltas, lakes, and plains.  We had fun!!

This week in P.E,we played Battleship. We played Battleship inside and got separated into teams. The goal of the game was to knock over all the other teams bowling pins to win the game. If you have two or three bowling pins knocked down you would need to make a basket into the other team's hoop if you get the ball in you get to put all your pins up.

​During this week our class earned a paperclip party for October 29th. In specials we drew our shoes, we played a game called Catch and Tagin music, and in library we did a scavenger hunt on books. 

In math, we subtracted, added, and multiplied decimals with area models and place value charts. 

In science we made our final Mill Pond Ecosystem model and are learning about food webs.

In ELA we started fantasy book clubs and are reading The Jumbies.

This week in specials in P.E. we played invaders and in art we made the day of the dead mask, and in music we played the drums, egg shakers, bells, tambourines, the drum sticks and musical sticks.

In math, we changed fractions into decimals, and the spooky place value sorting, placing decimals on a place value chart and we did expanded form.

In ELA we did a heart map and double sided journal entry. We’re also doing cocoa cafe. We have 100 stars in the 1,000 book challenge!  

​In science, we did food chains and food webs about the kelp forest. We also planted dormant seeds.
In SEL we talked about how to be a good listener. We changed seats. This is all that happened this week.

This week was fantastic and awesome! Monday morning we played invaders in P.E. This week we worked on fractions and decimals. We learned how to do expanded form the fifth grade way with fractions and decimals. Today we did zearn for the first time. Zearn is a math app that has the lessons from the Eureka math book but on the Ipad. We also had a check-in with fractions and decimals. In science we talked about ecosystems and the 4 spheres on Earth. The 4 spheres are hydrosphere, biosphere, geosphere, and atmosphere. On Wednesday we had a spelling assessment. In ELA  we did stop and jot. Stop and jot is where you're reading a book. Then when you have a question you write it down on a sticky note then you put it in your book. Some of the kids went to band, chorus, and orchestra. Our class really enjoyed it. Everyone is so excited for their concerts. This week was spectacular and I know next week will be awesome.

A silly sketch is a funny sketch that we draw in our sketchbook. For Thursday, we drew a snail surfing. Then, we started our new project. We are creating masks for the Mexican holiday day of the dead. They kind of look like masks you could wear for Halloween. But we did not finish them on Thursday, but we will probably finish the next class or the class after that.  

Music: For music, the first thing we did was join the google classroom for music. Then we took a survey that explained about us. After that, we talked about how 
Everybody can learn to do music. And we also talked about the meaning of neuroplasticity. At the end, we played a game called skip a beat, take a seat. For that game, the teacher comes up with a pattern on the drums and we have to do the pattern a certain amount of times. If we play more than that number of times, we have to sit down and we are out. 

PE: Right when we get in the gymnasium we walk around the track until all of the other classes get in. We did a game that you get in teams of 4 or 5 people. There is a row of chairs in front of the two teams. The first people in line for the two teams ran and started jumping in order from chair to chair. When the two people met in the middle, they did rock, paper, scissors, shoot. Whoever won, got to keep going. If they lose, they have to go to the back of the line. Then another person from the team that lost comes in and tries to block the other person from coming to the end because the first person to go through the entire row of chairs gets a point. Whoever gets the most points in 3 min wins.
Math: We are learning about having a growth mindset and neuroplasticity in math, too! We did Ken Ken math. If you don’t know what Ken Ken is it is like sudoku but with much more math involved.
Science: We took a walk in the woods and looked for living and nonliving things, and also wrote down our wonders.
Assemblies: 
This week, we had two assemblies. The first one was the ipad assembly. They talked about the rules for the ipad and how to hold it correctly and use it correctly. We also had an assembly for the beginning of the month. The key value for the month is respect. We also sang the Star Spangled Banner and had a moment of silence for all the people who died on September 11th.
