The class will be celebrating Valentine's Day on Friday 2/16. The kids will be creating compliment books and writing a compliment for each one of their classmates. There is no need to buy any special Valentine's Day cards. Mrs. Niece will also be sending in snacks for the kids to enjoy. They are 9 paperclips away from a party - I think we can make it happen!

The fifth grade team is looking for your help! Do you or someone you know have expertise in the any of the following areas:
- protecting the environment - social wellbeing - being engaged in intellectual activities - emotional wellbeing - spiritual wellbeing - physical wellbeing If so, please fill out this quick survey! We all appreciate your help! Dear Parent or Guardian:
We are writing to tell you about an exciting project we are about to do in fifth grade. The fifth grade at Mill Pond School is integrating Project Based Learning, or PBL, into our curriculum, to help students learn better. A project motivates students to gain knowledge and they remember it longer. Projects give students the chance to apply the skills they learn in school to personally relevant and real-world situations. Your child also learns skills in PBL such as how to think critically, solve problems, work in teams, and make presentations. These skills will help students succeed in the future, both in school and in today’s work world. Our project is called The Wellness Project. Students will learn about personal wellness, research, and reading and writing expository texts. The project’s Driving Question, which focuses our work, is: How can I improve my personal wellness and how can I teach others about wellness? Students will be involved in researching on the Internet, interviewing community members, sharing in focus groups, and creating a workshop for peers. Your child will work individually for a part of the project and in a team, guided by fifth grade teachers, for another part. We are excited to be working with other teachers and classes. To learn more about this project, please visit our Wellness PBL website: https://mpsgrade5wellness.weebly.com/ At the end of the project students will share workshops they created during a fifth grade Wellness Day. During this day fifth graders will both teach and attend wellness workshops. Kids will be teaching kids. We will focus on 6 dimensions of wellness: social, emotional, physical, intellectual, spiritual, and environmental. Part of PBL is bringing the community into the classroom. If you are an expert in any of these fields or have connections to people or groups that would be interested in presenting to classrooms or the entire fifth grade we would love to hear from you. Please fill out the following form if you can contribute in any way: Wellness Expertise Parent Survey Please do not hesitate to contact your child’s teacher if you have any questions about the project! Sincerely, Fifth Grade Teachers This week has been super productive and brimming with learning. Let's check out the weekly update, where you can see what us kids have been up to!
This week in math, we've been working on fraction word problems, and studying for the module 3 test. We did a fun activity which was a fraction scavenger hunt, and we also completed a study guide. It's been a fun (and sometimes regular) week with math this week. We did lots of studying for homework, in school, and in our free time. Everyone has been working hard towards their goal: doing well on the module 3 test! In social studies we've been wrapping up our Jamestown colony learning and started learning about the Plymouth settlement. We've been filling in vocabulary charts, Pilgrim packets, and been learning about their history. Everybody has been taking notes in their matrix which will give them information for our upcoming chapter 6 projects! Social studies has been really interesting this week! Mrs. Gestrich has definitely done an amazing job on getting everybody hooked onto the three main settlements- Roanoke, Jamestown, and Plymouth. In science we've been focusing on mixtures and solutions, which is our current unit. We did a lab experiment on measuring out how many grams 50 mL is, and why you would get 50 grams. We also added salt to our 50 mL of water and got results that showed that salt doesn't disappear when you put it in water. It dissolves! We answered focused questions and also learned new vocabulary. Science has been very productive this week. In ELA we have been working on our wellness plans. We could choose 1-3 dimensions to work on. Emotional, environmental, intellectual, social, physical, and spiritual. We have started our research plan. Our guiding question is “How can we improve ourselves in the dimension(s) we're working in?” Everybody is looking at the wellness website the 5th grade teachers created, which has a ton of links that take you to different websites that have ideas on how to create a wellness plan. Wellness is an essential part of life, and everyone is beginning to learn that. ELA has been very exciting his week! That's the basic summary of this week! We've been learning so much, and can't wait to see what's coming next week! By Diya K |
