Congratulations! We all survived the first week of Daylight's Savings! Although we gain an hour, it truly can be a rough adjustment, but it was business as usual for the A008 kiddos. I am so impressed with this group!
We had such a special week. On Wednesday, students were lucky to attend a wonderful hands-on presentation from the Museum of Science. Students got to learn about, explore, and identify various rocks and minerals. Their hard work with Mrs. Buffone paid off as they got to apply their knowledge to identify their rocks in various stations. See pictures below!
Then, on Thursday, we viewed a webcast presented by Scholastic called "Bigger Than Words" featuring musical artist and writer Usher! Usher had several big messages, in the form of phrases, for kids everywhere including "Bigger Than" and "Possible." Usher stated, "Be bigger than yourself. If you think bigger than, then you are going to be better than you ever expected. If you aim for bigger than, then you always land in a better space."
They also talked about "how reading can open a world of possible open for you and how you can make possible happen for others just by sharing your love of reading." We are going to take small steps of action to make sure that we can do this both locally and globally. To help share our love of reading with each other we will be sharing book talks once a week. Students took home paperwork explaining book talks, and there is information under the ELA tab as well. On the larger scale, we will be taking our call to action from Scholastic and Usher. Usher started a new foundation called New Look. We will be voting for an organization to receive 100,000 free books from the New Look Foundation. How cool is that?

Usher also talked about why he reads. He says he reads to "escape the reality I have, to have calm and quiet time. You can use your imagination and go as far as you want. The more I read the more I know about life, the further my understanding goes...to become more understanding." To watch the webcast you can click here. At the end of the webcast, Usher performed his hit, "Without You." Kids had a good time singing and "dancing" to the performance.
In addition to the webcast and MOS presentation, students learned how to use an area model to multiply multi-digit numbers and multiply a whole number by a decimal using decimal models, decimal squares, and the standard algorithm. How-to videos are posted. In ELA, students continued working on character traits, comprehension strategies, and coming up with the right ending for their memoirs.
Next week we will be wrapping up our decimal multiplication unit (read - look for a test announcement and study guide soon!) and continuing our memoirs.
