Report Cards: A Note to Students

3/25/2014

Can you believe that you are 2/3 of the way done with fifth grade?! It doesn't seem too long ago that we were all meeting for the first time.

Report cards are going to be available to your parents Friday, 3/28 at 2:30. We covered a LOT this trimester: narrative writing, summarizing, main idea, historical fiction, character traits, geometry, division, explorers, exploration, and more!

You will notice several things on your report card. First, you will see your learner quality grades. These are graded with:
R - rarely
S - sometimes
U - usually
C - consistently

Everyone should strive to be consistent in your learner qualities. These grades are about becoming independent, responsible learners.

Secondly, you will see the grades for your classes. You are graded with:
NA - Not Applicable (this area wasn't tested this trimester)

4 - Advanced Student work consistently demonstrates advanced understanding of grade level standard

3 - Proficient Student work consistently demonstrates proficient understanding of grade level standard

2 - Approaching Student work demonstrates progress towards understanding of grade level standard

1- Limited Student work does not meet grade level standard

The work you completed in the second trimester was more difficult than the first trimester. We expected you to take what we have taught you and to apply it to more difficult texts, independently, therefore it was more difficult to earn a 3 than it was in the first trimester.

If there is one piece of advice I can give to you for a successful rest of the school year is to use your resources:
- use your reading comprehension strategies
- use graphic organizers to plan your writing
- use your editing and revision checklists
- use your math interactive notebook
- MOST IMPORTANTLY: ask for help when you need it and accept help when it is offered. We all want you to succeed and know that you are all capable of great things!

If you have any questions about your report card I will be more than happy to speak with you and answer any questions.
