Looking Closely

This week was all about "looking closely." Although it was a short week with a snow day Monday and a 2 hr. delay on Tuesday, this week was jam-packed with a lot of learning!

In math, students solved math division problems by drawing pictures. They learned that division and fractions are very closely related. In partners and the whole class, students developed pictures, division problems, fractions, and related addition and multiplication equations to the same problem. They did a wonderful job and were true mathematicians! In addition, we were able to use the Chrome Books on Thursday in order to practice for the upcoming PARCC tests.

In ELA, we started working on close reading. Close reading is when students are given Text-Dependent Questions, which set the purpose for reading, and read with the question in mind. With a highlighter or pencil, students highlight/underline evidence in the text that supports an answer to the question. This happens typically three times. Students are given a different question with each question requiring students to dig just a little digger into the text. Finally, students write a response to a question using evidence from the text. Being able to use evidence from the text in order to answer a question is certainly an important question, and will be put to good use as we start opinion and research writing.

With today being the last day before February break and the day before Valentine's day, we had to have a little fun. The students rotated through the class writing a compliment in a Valentine's Day Compliment Book for each student. By the end, everyone had a book filled with compliments, and left feeling great.

While we wrote our compliments, we played music. Of course, we had some students who just couldn't help but move to the beat. So, at the very end of the day when everything was done, we had two students participate in an exciting dance-off. Way to go, CW and CJ! You two always liven things up! Watch below!

I hope everyone enjoys a safe, healthy, fun, and relaxing break!
