Happy New Year!

The kiddos in A008 came back from winter break well rested and ready to work! Since the New Year, we have started new concepts, and practice for PARCC has been kicked into high gear. Since we follow the Common Core State Standards, we are already doing what needs to be done in order to be prepared for PARCC; however, we are taking as many steps as possible to hopefully ease nerves before the real test. We have gone to the lab to practice the technical aspects of the test- learning how to use the tools in the toolbar, moving through the test from question to question, highlighting, taking notes, and also taking practice tests. We will continue to practice and utilize the practice tests in both math and ELA before we take the test.

In ELA, we started working on identifying the main idea. We started off small by identifying the main idea that is explicitly stated in one paragraph, and worked our way up to identifying the main idea of a lengthy article. Finding the main idea is not easy. Please go to the ELA page to see the main idea resources I have up.  We have also worked on sentence structures by first identifying a subject and predicate in simple sentences and are now working on compound and complex sentences. Making sure you use various sentence structures in your writing is an important piece of having sentence fluency in your piece.

In Math we are tackling fractions! We have worked on identifying common denominators, comparing, ordering, reducing/simplifying, and adding and subtracting fractions. We are currently working on adding and subtracting mixed numbers. There will be a test next week!

For now, I hope everyone remains safe and warm with the impending blizzard on its way!
