Spelling

I forgot my Spelling homework at school!
Grade 5 High Frequency Word List

Fifth Grade Spelling
Spelling Routine:
Monday: assessment of previous week's words; introduction to the new words
Monday - Thursday: nightly spelling homework
Friday: homework is due in the morning! Students will get their homework back before the end of the day to study over the weekend.

At the beginning of the year, students' spelling of the Grade 5 High Frequency words was assessed. Each full week of school, students will receive new words. Most words will be from the Grade 5 High Frequency list, but some words may contain similar spelling patters to words on the High Frequency list. The words on the list are the most commonly used and misspelled words among fifth graders.

In addition, Fifth grade spelling involves understanding vowel combinations, root words, and word parts such as prefixes and suffixes. We will be using the Words Their Way word study program in order to teach these spelling patterns.  Students take an assessment at the beginning of the year to determine if they will participate in the Words Their Way program. If students are not in the WTW program, they will receive an alternate spelling list.
